Have you heard “daylighting” mentioned in conversations or social media? Have you wondered what architects consider when they discuss “daylighting?”
What is daylighting? Daylighting utilizes design tools which maximize the potential natural light to enhance the interior spaces of the building for the end user.
What are benefits of daylighting? Studies show daylighting use increases retail sales, and increases productivity in office buildings, manufacturing, and schools. Utilizing natural light can save on energy bills if heat gain is addressed appropriately. Daylighting should be a key factor during the design process so that the strategy can be implemented during construction and finish out of the building/space.
How do architects plan for daylighting? First, your architect will situate (known as ‘siting’) the building based on the sun’s path in your area and the type of sunlight needed and/or desired for the function of the space. Next, he/she will locate and size windows based on which side of the building the space is on and how much light the room requires. Third, your architect will ensure daylighting is diffused in order to address heat gain as well as your privacy needs.
Daylighting is an important aspect of building design. The best way to utilize natural light begins by planning during design and implementing during construction. It is important to consider the siting of the building, what type of light you want in each space and the need for diffusing/controlling the light.
